Shk 8, 2022

On February 8, at the Nartel Hotel, the research “Essential causes of low participation of women from minorities as media creators in the Kosovo media” was launched, prepared by the authors Shqipe Gjocaj and Dafina Halili.

During this event there was a panel discussion, where the findings from the research were discussed, and there was a fruitful discussion between the participants and the panelists, where many issues were raised about the position of women from minorities in the media in Kosovo.

Shqipe Gjocaj, author of this research, spoke about the findings and the research process. It was discussed about the reasons that women from minorities in Kosovo have a low participation as media creators in our country. Some of the reasons are institutionalized racism, racial discrimination and lack of employment opportunities, stereotypical portrayal in the media, lack of inclusiveness.

Besides the authors, part of the panel discussion was also Nora Xhuzi, a journalist in the Egyptian editorial office, who was also part of the research. She talked more about the challenges of being a journalist, ranging from prejudices about physical appearance and multiple harassments. Despite the fact that the laws are well regulated in this regard, they do not apply in practice according to Nora. Despite all this she still encourages all girls to pursue their dream despite the difficulties.

Anđelka Ćup from Radio Gračanica spoke about the challenges of Serbian women as media creators in Kosovo. She discussed the language used in the media in Kosovo, she encouraged unification and respect for the rights of all communities.

This panel discussion is part of the project “Strengthening Independent Media and Promoting the Safety of Journalists in Kosovo”, which is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development of the United Kingdom through the British Embassy in Pristina and Albany Associates.
